Issued: Feb 12, 2015. Architect and educator Robert Robinson Taylor spent much of his career at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where he supervised the design and construction of many of the building on campus while also overseeing the school’s programs in industrial education and the building trades. He was the first African American to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and likely was the country’s first academically-trained black architect. This stamp features a photograph of Taylor taken circa 1890, when he was a 22-year-old student at MIT. (APS)
